If you’re looking for a high-quality pedal-style effect, you can’t go past the Greek manufacturer Crazy Tube Circuits. Just a few weeks ago, I had the Venus Overdrive pedal here for testing and was impressed by the sound quality of the little box. Accordingly, I’m approaching the Mirage pedal with high expectations—and I can already tell you: You were not disappointed.

The reverb algorithms
Each of the two reverb engines of the Crazy Tube Circuits Mirage Dual Reverb features identical algorithms. Eight of these can be accessed directly using the Voice control. A Shift switch provides access to eight additional sounds for each engine.

Since both engines can be operated one after the other, side by side or individually, there are countless routing possibilities.

The routing
The routing of the Crazy Tube Circuits Mirage Dual Reverb is one of its key features. Serial routing allows you to stack the two reverb engines or use each engine independently for two mono reverb presets. The send/return effects loop between Engine 1 and Engine 2 is ideal for adding modulation, delay, filter, or even distortion/fuzz pedals for advanced sonic experimentation.

The Mirage Reverb in practice in the FreqPort loop
Once you’ve found your preferred setup and set all the miniature switches in the case to the correct position, you can really get started. To demonstrate some of the different reverb algorithms, I connected the Crazy Tube Circuits Mirage Dual Reverb in stereo mode to the DAW via Freqport FreqInOut. This allows you to use the Mirage like a plug-in—and I can tweak, tweak, and discover in real time. Awesome.
First, I record a lick to demonstrate the properties of the Mirage’s reverb. I cycle through a few settings; the file names indicate the algorithm used. I deliberately chose subtle settings—so listen carefully!
Since the Crazy Tube Circuits Mirage Dual Reverb is also interesting for keyboard players and can even perform excellently on drums, here are a few sound samples with snare and synths. Here, too, the file names indicate the algorithm used, even separated by left and right channels. The effect is modified in real time during bounce, which is no problem thanks to the FreqPort FreqInOut.

Conclusion
The Crazy Tube Circuits Mirage delivers top-quality reverb and, thanks to its extensive routing options, is extremely versatile. Whether for ambient guitarists, synth nerds, or drummers looking for a reverb with character, everyone will find what they’re looking for here.
